About the organization

“Big Brothers Big Sisters” is an interregional community organization aimed at supporting the upbringing of the young generation. We support children who need attention: kids without parents, adopted children or children from single-parent, large, or socially unprotected families, as well as disabled children.

The program of individual mentoring gives children a chance to unlock their potential, feel self-confident, adapt to the life of community and actively participate in it.

Our Mission

To help children and youths reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships with measurable impact.

What We Do

We help children who need support and attention find it in friendship with a volunteer mentor.

Why We Do It

If you spend at least a few hours every month with a child who is going through hard times, (s)he will become more open and self-confident.

What Our Goal Is

We want every child who needs a mentor to have one.

Our Story

“Big Brothers Big Sisters” is part of an international program Big Brothers Big Sisters International, whose story started in 1902. Today, it is one of the most effective programs of individual mentoring for children who need support. The organization runs in 14 countries (Australia, Austria, Bermudas, Bulgaria, Israel, Ireland, Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, USA, Trinidad and Tobago, South Korea, Russia) and helps over 300,000 children.

The development of the company in Russia began with the opening of regional mentoring programs.

Thus, in 1999, the first mentoring program was started in Perm. The main direction of its work was finding volunteer mentors for children left without parents. Over the next 7 years, the program spread to other regions of the Russian Federation – Kirov, Perm, Tambov, Yoshkar-Ola, Yaroslavl. At that time, the program was only functioning with the help of enthusiasts, without financing or a consistent staff.

In 2003, the “Big Brothers Big Sisters” company was officially registered as an interregional community organization for supporting the upbringing of the young generation. That same year, we received an official certificate from the Governmental Institute of Family and Social Education. Thus, the program began operating in Moscow and there began a serious process of introducing professional methods and implementingstandards, as well as creating a professional team of workers. Beneficiaries – children without parents

In 2013, the program also began working in St. Petersburg.

In 2014 in Moscow and in 2015 in St. Petersburg, the program started working with children from adopted and socially unprotected families.

In 2016, a project called “Rays of Kindness” was started in Moscow – a mentoring project for kids with Down Syndrome. The project works with the charity organization, “Downside Up”.

Also in 2016, a project dedicated to professional orientation was opened in St. Petersburg together with Jamie’s Italian restaurant.

On the 21st of July 2016, a project called “Mentors: Not Just Nearby But Together” was accepted by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, at the Forum of Agencies for Strategic Initiatives. Because of that, the program was also started in the Moscow area (Lyubertsy, Reutov, Orekhovo-Zuevo), as well as in the Tula area.

We are planning to expand our geography and have more Mentor-Mentee couples so that we can give every child who needs attention and care a chance to be supported!

***

We realize that the most important thing for every child is support and acceptance from an adult. Our volunteers become friends and mentors for children.

We are proud of the fact that we were able to find mentors for hundreds of kids from a disadvantaged environment, provide them with friendly support, acceptance and care from adults, and hope for the future.

We can’t change children’s past, but we can give them an opportunity to build their future!
